Local Unit & Position Description

DNV is seeking a talented and motivated (Senior) Principal Engineer to join our R&D team at Spadeadam.

 

Spadeadam R&D is a World leading full scale research facility at the forefront of implementing the green energy transition around the world today, contributing to a safer world by improving understanding of major hazards across industries. For over 40 years, Spadeadam has conducted full scale experiments to assess the consequences of major hazards and their effects on people, property and the environment. The results of which have been used to develop products, protect people and infrastructure from both accidental and deliberate threats.

 

The team specialise in carrying our full-scale experiments involving liquid and gaseous fuel releases, fire, explosion, product development and associated consultancy services to assure safe operations for our Global energy and security customers.

We’re looking for an experienced chartered mechanical engineer (or in a relevant discipline e.g. civil, marine, structural), ideally with an Oil & Gas or Renewables industry bias, who will deliver technical work and assist with the development of a growing team of engineers and scientists. The technical work will consist of design and construction of experimental rigs, problem solving, running of test programmes and maintenance of equipment. In this role you will support supervision, review and verification of the execution of the team’s projects, nurture internal and external customer relationships, identify new work opportunities, coordinate the bidding and execution of services, develop a high calibre team to add value to the business, and at all times assure the highest quality of service delivery to meet customer requirements within the timeframe, costs and quality standards established as well as interface with a wide range of disciplines within the company, and work with a variety of clients.

 

Key accountabilities

You will be responsible for several tasks in the areas of operations, customer focus and people management, including:

  • Working as technical lead on projects to accomplish the overall delivery of optimum solutions to clients with the timeframe, costs and quality standards established.
  • Designing and constructing full-scale major hazard experimental rigs.
  • Developing technical documents and scope of work packages for projects, as well as developing (or supervising the development of) specifications for mechanical systems and associated equipment, authorising key drawings and documents, controlling technical change and providing technical guidance and solutions where required.
  • Leading design reviews, HAZID and HAZOP studies.
  • Developing and reviewing Performance Standards for Safety Critical Elements related to the mechanical system.
  • Leading technical audits, participating in incident investigations, and proactively engaging in the survey, assessment or analysis of any technical situation that may arise on an experimental rig.
  • Carrying technical responsibility for the engineering team, reporting to the Head of Section (HOS).
  • Supporting the HOS to develop and grow the R&D business including preparation of tenders.
  • Winning work from new and existing customers by identifying opportunities for wider integration of services, defining solutions for customers and bidding for contracts.
  • Working with the Business Development/Sales team to build productive customer relationships and identify new business opportunities.
  • Assisting in development and maintaining the technical capabilities of the unit and providing expert guidance and on-the-job training to team members on projects

Position Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree qualified in relevant engineering discipline.
  • A Chartered Engineer, with profound and proven experience of working in an engineering organisation in the energy industry.
  • Chartered member of a relevant professional institutional body.
  • Must be willing and able to obtain and maintain a U.K. SC Clearance, application for clearance will be assisted by DNV

Desirable:

  • Masters Degree in safety related discipline (e.g. fire and explosion, risk etc.).

Competency requirements, knowledge and behaviours

Essential:

  • Excellent technical knowledge and experience in the mechanical static and rotating equipment discipline within the international oil and gas industry (e.g. diesel generators, gas turbine generators, compressors, pressure vessels, pipelines, heat exchangers, pumps and VSD drive systems).
  • Thorough appreciation of technical safety and its impact on the various control systems.
  • Experience of reviewing and approving Piping/Mechanical deliverables such isometrics, GA’s, stress analysis etc.
  • Awareness of the many approaches to structural design and the ability to advise on methods of design and construction.
  • Curious and solution oriented, with a keen interest and knowledge of offshore industry and project management.
  • Methodical and proficient project management skills: ability to proactively plan and co-ordinate key activities. Ability to meet with prospective clients, to plan, price and win new work and to manage that work to completion both to budget and timeframe.
  • Adaptable and reactive with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and maintain high performance without compromising on quality, when working to challenging deadlines, with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent communicator to both specialist and non-specialist stakeholders – including the ability to write clear and concise reports. Able to robustly analyse and present complex solutions and ideas.
  • Expert in the use of MS office package.

 

Desirable:

  • Experience of supporting or leading business development activities.
  • Experience in training and mentoring of junior team members.
  • Commitment to innovation, embracing the need and drive for change to ensure a sustainable competitive business advantage.
  • Knowledge of structural analysis (e.g. fracture mechanics, Finite Element Analysis, stress analysis, structural design, wave dynamics, seismic design, engineering materials, etc.).
  • Background in Offshore structures, Oil & Gas or Offshore Wind.
