Local Unit & Position Description

DNV’s - Energy Systems North America Region is seeking a Senior Engineer (Leak Detection & Hydraulics) to work in the Hydraulics and Flow Assurance group in the Advisory Services Department in Midstream/Downstream & Labs service area. This team of engineering consultants specializes in hydraulic and flow assurance modeling, single phase steady state and transient hydraulics analysis (Synergi Pipeline Simulator), leak detection analyses, as well as multiphase thermal and hydraulic steady state and transient analysis.


The Senior Engineer will be responsible for the initiation, development, and completion of leak detection (LD) studies for DNV clients, including helping them determine appropriate LD technology for their needs, assessing and tuning their current LD systems, carrying out LD compliance reviews, and analyzing new LD technology for certification. This person will also be involved in hydraulics and flow assurance studies.


The position is based in the Houston (Katy) office with a hybrid work model.

This position reports to the Head of Section in Hydraulics & Flow Assurance.

Position Qualifications

What You'll Do

  • Carry out Leak Detection and Hydraulics & Flow Assurance studies using software packages, e.g., SPS, Synergi Gas, Synergi Water, LIQT, AFT Fathom, OLGA, etc
  • Compiling data received from pipeline operators and determining the appropriate methodologies and calculations to solve issue at hand
  • Audit and review existing pipeline facilities to identify improvement opportunities, potential problems, and remedies to existing problems
  • Working effectively and efficiently within a group of engineers and consultants, reviewing, and verifying each other’s work
  • Business development with new and existing customers
  • Develop an influential role within the group as well as the industry
  • Documenting analyses as well as processes and procedures in a technical format to clearly deliver results and the implications of those results to the pipeline operator
  • Direct a group of engineers through project management
  • Interact with other team members and clients in a manner that is professional and promotes collaboration
  • Writing of technical papers or presentations of innovative work or projects
  • Attending technical seminars to increase understanding of the pipeline industry and new technologies as well as to develop projects
  • Train, mentor, and support junior engineers and coop students


  • Education: B.S. or greater in Engineering from an accredited university
  • Years of related experience: 5 – 10
  • Technical skills:
    • Strong technical writing skills, problem solving, critical thinking, ability to pick up technical concepts quickly
    • At least 5 years’ experience within field of leak detection and pipeline hydraulics
    • Expertise in single and multiphase pipelines hydraulic simulation. Steady state and transient hydraulic analyses using industry standard software, e.g., SPS, Pipeline Studio, AFT Impulse, OLGA, PIPEPHASE, and PIPESIM
    • Specific expertise with leak detection systems in liquid and gas lines
    • Operational experience is a plus
  • Behavioral competencies:

  • Travel requirement (% of the year): less than 15%
  • Physical abilities necessary to perform regular functions of the job (standing, lifting, climbing, other)
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills

  • CFD simulation experience in flow assurance applications
