DNV Spadeadam Research and Development could be the place for you. We are offering a Higher Apprenticeship that could lead to you becoming a Electrical Technician, with scope to moving onto more senior roles as you become more knowledgeable, skilled and experienced.

Spadeadam Research and Development is a secure, site where large scale hazards testing is carried out for a range of industries. Our site provides a challenging environment where personnel are encouraged to develop their skills and progress their education. At present, site personnel are being supported in their education all the way to doctorate level. If you join us as an apprentice you will develop with a mixture of formal education, on the job training and mentoring.

Position Qualifications

The Electrical Technician Apprentice (ETA) will be based on daily basis in Spadeadam and undergo a 4-year apprenticeship combining formal training and practical experience.  It is expected that the ETA would develop to fulfill Qualified Electrician roles including:


  • Diagnose and repair electrical problems in commercial and domestic electrical systems, including fault-finding, rewiring, and monitoring
  • Assess the parts needed for a job and place orders for those parts
  • Conduct routine maintenance and testing on commercial and domestic electrical systems, and ensure installations are to manufacturer standards, including in fire alarms and security systems
  • Rewire faulty electrical systems, such as lighting, heating systems, and alarms
  • Ensure good quality workmanship which upholds company standards, complies with building codes, and follows safety requirements
  • Work alone to find and present faults and concerns in electrical systems without receiving explicit direction
  • QUALIFICATIONS NVQ Level 3 and AM2 completed (then to be called AM2S).


In addition to the Qualified Electrician roles, the ETA, on completion of their apprenticeship will fulfil the following Technician duties:

  • Install, Calibrate and Maintain Instruments e.g. Pressure and Temperature sensors including cabling mounting etc.
  • To be able to design and build simple electronic circuitry for bespoke data recording
  • Working knowledge of PLC control
  • Competent in the use of varying types of Video Recording Equipment such as High Speed Video recording equipment, Thermal Imaging cameras and High quality production video cameras
  • Competent in the use of Data Logging equipment of varying types
  • Work alone to find and present faults and concerns in electrical systems without receiving explicit direction
  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft suite of programs to enable basic data processing and collating project information etc.

The ETA will eventually be responsible for supporting test work supervised by the relevant Project Engineer.
