Local Unit & Position Description

The role is within the Business Area Energy Systems and comprises the delivery of Measurement Services and long-term energy forecasts to support due diligence of wind and solar projects to Advisory customers in Japan and other countries in APAC.

 

The candidate will join the Renewables Advisory team and will be located in our Yokohama or Seoul office. The Renewables Advisory team consists of approximately 30 staff located in Seoul, Singapore, HCMC, Bangkok and Yokohama. In addition to these offices, our Asia Pacific energy and renewables advisory consulting practice has principal offices in Melbourne, Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai and Bangalore.

 

The main activities of the role of Measurement Engineer are:

  • Plan, project manage, execute and report on all aspects of Power Performance Measurement of wind turbines, in accordance with IEC 61400-12 Standards.
  • Undertake analysis of measured meteorological and turbine performance data in support of reporting power performance test results.
  • Manage installation and commissioning of wind measurement equipment (mast or remote sensing devices such as LIDAR, SODAR) and solar measurements (solar monitoring stations) and associated measurement equipment on behalf of customers.
  • Specify, plan and project manage installation and operation of other specialised measurements (e.g. load measurements, noise, etc.) on behalf of customers.
  • Participate in development of measurement hardware setup and measurement software.
  • Development of annual and long term solar energy assessments, using various modeling tools;
  • Development of uncertainty analyses using statistical and pragmatic approaches to determine probabilistic energy production forecasts;
  • Review of test procedures and methods to collect data to evaluate the performance of projects;
  • Review the feasibility of sites for development which will include, feasibility studies, energy yield optimization, site meteorological conditions.
  • Technical report writing;
  • Interfacing with customers to discuss results and risk mitigation;
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals including scope of services, schedule and budgeting;
  • Assist in the preparation of technical papers or presentations.

Position Qualifications

Education:

  • Degree in electrical, mechanical, aero-space, renewable energy, statistics, atmospheric science, mathematics, physics or other relevant discipline etc...

Knowledge, skills and experience required for the position are:

  • Strong technical and organizational skills;
  • Statistical analysis and database skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English and Japanese or Korean;
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment;
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with customers;
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with diverse people – customers and co-workers;
  • Flexibility and adaptability – issues and tasks may change quickly;
  • Experience of installing measurement and/or inspection equipment.
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting of wind, solar and/or turbine performance signals.
  • Proficiency in MS Office programs (primarily Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), plus an aptitude for analysis of large amounts of measured data via custom analysis packages.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including budget control, customer care, management of sub-contractors and progress against project milestones.
  • Understanding and following safety requirements for accessing and working on wind farm, solar plant constructions sites or remote green field sites domestically and internationally.

Experience of the following would be an advantage:

  • 3-5 years of experience in a similar position within the Wind Industry
  • Executing measurements or specialised tests on wind turbines and in particular the requirements of the IEC 61400 Standards.
  • Experience in load measurements on wind turbines.
  • Experience in other measurement services (acoustic noise, power quality, etc.) or inspection services.
  • Understanding of the characteristics of other measurement equipment of relevance to the wind and solar energy industries.
  • Familiarity with operation of data logging and communications equipment to support the capture and transmission of measurement data. Ability to troubleshoot as required.
  • Experience of developing proposals for work, including budgets, appropriate contractual terms, and undertaking negotiations on scope and price with customers.
  • Working knowledge of the renewable energy industry and project developers; construction knowledge is a plus
  • Familiarity with analysis packages used in the wind industry such as IMC Famos, Python, WAsP, Matlab, Windfarmer, Windapp etc.
  • Software developing skills
  • Wiring of measurement systems
  • Working on high voltage installations

Physical abilities

  • Normal office environment, regular walking, sitting, bending, twisting, standing and reaching.
  • Domestic and international travel to site locations.
  • Some domestic and international travel to other DNV office locations, customer’s offices and conferences.
  • Occasional work outdoors in harsh conditions including but not limited to climbing stairs and ladders to ascend wind turbines or masts, traveling by car up to six hours and walking on uneven terrain.
  • Must be able to perform physical work in wind farms or solar plants. (Electrical works, occasional heavy lifting, etc.)
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces
  • Must be able to work in heights (up to 160m)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
